Automated Slips

The patented Automated Slips (AS), developed by B Robotics W, eliminates the manual handling of slips and slip inserts on the working floor, boosting safety and productivity.

The AS handles tubulars from 3½” to 20″ (maximum passage is 23″), taking care of most drilling and running operations needed to complete a well.

The AS has six outer elements and six inner elements.  Each inner element has an insert holder with five inserts that rotate to position the properly-curved insert to a grip tubular.

The slips are moved into position and released by hydraulic pressure.  The hold capacity of the AS is 500 tons.  When operating in semi-automatic mode, an operator in the drilling cabin or doghouse selects the proper insert to grab a drill string.  In hands-free mode, the AS automatically positions the proper insert.

The AS can be fitted on a conventional drilling rig to improve safety, efficiency, and lower costs.
